IU Willets and Searingtown [1-8-17]
On the evening of Sunday, January 8th, 2017 the Albertson Fire Company was dispatched to a reported overturned vehicle in the water at the intersection of I.U. Willets Road and Searingtown Road. When firefighters arrived on scene they were met with a confirmed vehicle in a pond with three occupants trapped. Within a few minutes first responders had the three people removed from the water; however, one person was pronounced dead on scene. The other two people were transported to area hospitals but were also pronounced bringing the death toll to three people. Dive teams from the Freeport and Oyster Bay Fire Departments were called to the scene to help ensure there were no additional victims in the water. After several minutes of searching the icy waters it was determined there were no additional victims.
It was later stated that the vehicle was reported stolen the previous Friday and was picked up by the license plate reader of a state trooper on the Northern State Parkway. Once the vehicle was picked up by the reader the trooper began to follow the vehicle while waiting for backup. In the process the driver of the stolen auto noticed the police officer and took off ultimately crashing through a fence into the pond.
