Atlantic and Eastern [6-14-12]
Just after 03:00 hours on the morning of June 14th, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Eastern Boulevard. A member of the department was already on scene and requested the presence of an ambulance forthwith. Upon arrival, units found that the accident was atop the Atlantic Avenue bridge connecting Baldwin with Freeport. The first members on scene along with the Baldwin Chiefs immediately tended to the driver, the lone occupant, of the involved Lexus sedan. To their amazement, the driver was conscious at the time of their arrival despite the damage. The first ambulance to arrive on scene was County Ambulance 2351 who transported the driver to the Nassau County Medical Center with a nose laceration and a possible loss of consciousness. Baldwin Engine 202, Rescue 208, and an ambulance from their First Aid Company responded to the scene. Members of the engine company handled the spill and stretched a line for precautionary measures.
The primary investigation of the accident found that the driver was travelling eastbound on Atlantic Avenue when he struck a boat and its trailer on the shoulder. The twenty-five foot Grady White was on a trailer that was hitched to a pickup truck. The impact of the accident knocked the boat off of the trailer onto the curb and into a bridge railing. All four Baldwin Chiefs were on scene for the accident, with fire department units under the command of Chief Schwenker. After 200 units took up, the accident was left in the hands of First Precinct officers. All those on scene, took note of how fortunate the driver was to sustain moderately minor injuries in the crash despite the impact.
