Atlantic and Grand [5-27-12]
Just a few hours before the start of Memorial Day 2012, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Atlantic and Grand Avenues. The original call was put out just after 19:00 hours and stated that there was entrapment on the scene with a possible ejection as well. First Precinct officers along with at least one county ambulance and ESU also responded. Once on scene, Chief of Department Schwenker immediately requested the presence of the tool and an ambulance as he had one victim heavily trapped inside a Ford station wagon with another on the ground beside the vehicle. Moments later Baldwin Ladder 206 arrived on scene and began going to work. In just under twenty minutes, Baldwin firefighters had the roof, windshield, and necessary doors removed to fully extricate the young victim who was sitting on the side of impact. The Ford Escort wagon was struck by a Dodge Ram pickup whose driver stayed on scene and was not injured. Once extricated, the teenage girl was transported in Baldwin FD ambulance 2010 to Nassau County Medical Center with various injuries and a trauma team was requested. The victim lying beside the vehicle was tended to and transported in County Ambulance 2364; it is possible that this victim was ejected due to the impact of the collision. The driver of the wagon had no apparent injuries but was taken to the hospital anyway by Oceanside Ambulance 242A. In all, the four occupants of the Ford Escort wagon were transported to area hospitals with various injuries. After fire department units took up, the scene was left in the hands of First Precinct officers.
