Baldwin Ex-Captain Esposito Street Renaming [5-20-12]
In the early morning hours of May 18th, 2011 the Baldwin Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 2870 Grand Avenue, just off of Atlantic Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a heavy fire load throughout a two and a half story private dwelling. The fire was so intense that firefighters were forced to make an exterior attack on the fire before they could advance. Dozens of firefighters were on scene for the blaze, including Ex-Captain and veteran Baldwin firefighter Michael Esposito. During operations Michael began to feel discomfort in his chest and so he was checked out by medical personnel on scene who then transported him to South Nassau Communities Hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Esposito suffered a heart attack and passed away.
Since Michael’s line of duty death, his family and friends and his brothers and sisters of the fire service have not forgotten him. He is on their mind every time they roll to a call, especially Engine 201 to which Michael was a member of at the time of his passing. Ex-Captain Michael Esposito served the Baldwin community for over twenty-one years as a member of the fire service, holding many different titles in his time.
Just after the one year anniversary of Michael’s death on May 20th, 2012 the Baldwin Fire Department held a street naming ceremony in his honor. The small street adjacent to the firehouse’s number two side had been unnamed until the ceremony. On that Sunday afternoon, the street became Ex-Captain Michael Esposito Way. Now every time firefighters respond out of Baldwin headquarters they will have one more reminder of their departed brother who is gone, but truly not forgotten.
