McKinley Street [10-17-12]
At 17:37 hours on the evening of October 17th, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire at 1045 McKinley Street [Eastern Parkway and Milburn Avenue as the cross streets]. Nassau County Police, who had received multiple calls reporting the fire, had already been on scene. These officers advised the fire department they were responding to a working fire. A few members of the Baldwin FD had been on scene prior to the arrival of any units and were able to knock down some of the fire with a garden hose. The first to arrive on scene were met with smoke emanating from the eaves and roof of the home. The fire was located on the second floor in the rear of the home and was concentrated in the knee walls and roof.
Baldwin Engine 201 was the first engine to arrive on scene, picked up a hydrant in front of the home, and put a line into place. This line was the only one put into operation with a second line [not used] backing it up. Firefighters were able to make a quick knockdown under the direction of Chief of Department Schwenker. Freeport responded to the scene as the FAST team with Tiller 218 and Rescue 217-2. Standby in Baldwin Headquarters consisted of Freeport Engine 211 and a ladder and ambulance from Oceanside. The fire marshal was requested to the scene for a routine investigation into the cause of the fire.
