Sunrise and Charing Cross [9-11-12]
At 21:16 hours on the night of September 11th, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment. The location of the accident was given as Sunrise Highway and Charing Cross Road. Upon arrival, the first units on scene found a vehicle that had crashed through a fence, telephone pole, and ended up in the backyard of a home on Devonshire Road. When the car crashed through the telephone pole it managed to take down a transformer and wires along with it. Due to the downed wires, LIPA was requested to the scene immediately. When firefighters arrived on scene, they were able to work around the downed wires and free the two occupants of the vehicle. The occupants were extricated from their vehicle without the use of tools as the driver’s door was able to be pulled open enough. Once removed, the driver and her passenger were transported in Baldwin Ambulance 2010A and County Ambulance 2364. Once the victims were transported, all fire department units took up with the exception of the Chiefs, who along with police awaited the arrival of LIPA. All fire department units were under the command of Baldwin Chief of Department Schwenker [205]. The accident knocked out power to at least one residence and a small section of Sunrise Highway.
