Sunrise and Central [10-5-12]
At 14:28 hours on the afternoon of October 5th, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to a reported car fire at Sunrise Highway and Central Avenue. Nassau County Police who were already on scene advised fire department dispatch that units were responding to a working car fire. The burning vehicle was located on Central Avenue, adjacent to the Baldwin Coach Diner. Prior to the van becoming fully engulfed, the driver [the only occupant of the vehicle] safely exited her vehicle. She later stated to police that she had run something over and it had become lodged underneath the van and that the vehicle was a special needs van. Baldwin Engine 203 was the first engine on scene and immediately put a line into operation with a second line right behind it. Both lines along with “purple k” extinguishers and a brief foam operation led to the full knockdown of the fire. Baldwin Engine 202 also responded to the scene and assisted in operations. After twenty minutes, the main body of fire was knocked down and firefighters began overhauling to check for pockets of fire.
