Prospect Drive [8-14-12]
Two, two hundred pound propane tanks led to the explosion of a Brentwood home on Prospect Drive on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 14th. The force of the blast was felt throughout the neighborhood and sent debris scattering across several yards. The homes immediately surrounding the leveled home were impacted as well, with at least one neighboring home needing to be condemned. Some neighbors rushed to the site to help as there were people who were trapped underneath the rubble. Those first on scene began pulling victims out while evaluating the scene around them.
The fire department immediately responded to the scene and the request for technical rescue teams [TRTs] was placed once the magnitude of the situation was realized. Commack and Brentwood were among the towns that sent TRT teams to the site while multiple mutual aid ambulances were also requested. A high number of ambulances were needed after the scene was declared a mass casualty incident by the incident commander. Among the aided from the home, was a victim with serious burns to their body and so they were airlifted to Southside Hospital. However, that person was later relocated to Stony Brook University Hospital.
At least six people were pulled from the home, the youngest among them an eighteen month old boy who did not survive the blast and later died at Southside Hospital. Aside from the injured occupants of the home, various police officers, firefighters, neighbors, and workers were injured. It was stated that as many as fourteen people were injured as a result of the explosion.
Within forty-eight hours of the incident, it was confirmed that the propane tanks led to the blast. However, was caused them to go off remained under investigation. Among the fire departments involved were: Brentwood, East Brentwood, Wyandanch, Deer Park, Melville, East Northport, Commack, Bay Shore, Islip, East Islip, Islip Terrace, Central Islip, Happauge, Lakeland, Holbrook, West Islip, Sayville, Centerreach, Smithtown, and Nesconset.
