Carman Avenue [3-16-21]
Late on the night of Tuesday, March 16th, 2021 the East Meadow Fire Department was called to a building fire on Carman Avenue off Stewart Avenue. East Meadow Chief of Department James Walsh [6100] was among the first fire units to arrive on scene and reported smoke showing. Moments later a signal ten [working fire] was transmitted for fire in a laundromat – one of several businesses in the one-story taxpayer. As hand lines were being stretched and put into operation other firefighters worked to force entry into the adjacent stores which were all closed and locked up at the time of the fire. Despite heavy smoke coming from many of the storefronts the main body of fire was contained to the laundromat. Firefighters’ efforts were hindered by a gypsum style roof and double ceiling. Among the departments called for mutual aid was Westbury, Hicksville, Wantagh, Levittown, Uniondale, and North Bellmore. The cause of the fire is under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of East Meadow Chief of Department James Walsh [6100].
