Bay Park [12-3-11]
Just before midnight on December 3rd, the East Rockaway Fire Department was toned out for a water rescue at Bay Park. Knowing it was a cold, fall night and that the water temperature was much colder than the air the department wasted no time in responding to the scene. This was not their first or second of the year, but at least the third incident in which a car entered the water in the vicinity of Bay Park. However, this time was different. First arriving units were met with no occupants on the scene and a Ford Escort partially submerged in the water (most of it resting battered on the rocks). Police officers from the fourth precinct were just as puzzled about the situation, and in a short time had aviation airborne overheard looking for the suspect or suspects. Ladder 403 and Rescue 407 were amongst the units on scene along with Chiefs 401, 4012, and 4013. Nassau County ESU was called to the scene to remove the vehicle from the water.
