Ocean Avenue [4-12-16]

On the night of Tuesday April 12, 2016 at 22:43hrs, the East Rockaway Fire Department was alerted for a reported house fire at 462 Ocean Avenue. When the first responding Chiefs notified Firecom that they were responding, the Chiefs were given additional information from Firecom that they were receiving multiple calls for the house fire and that an occupant may still be in the residence.
Upon arrival of the first Chief, it was confirmed that there was a fire on the second floor of the address and that neighbors were reporting that the resident was still upstairs in the apartment. At this time a Signal 10 ( Working Fire ) was transmitted and the Chiefs were going to attempt to gain access to the fire apartment to search for the resident.
Engine 404 and Ladder 403 arrived on scene first due, closely followed by Engine 406 and Engine 405, and the rest of the departments apparatus. Operations began immediately at this time to search for a victim in the fire apartment by the members of Ladder 403, while Engine 404 stretched a hose line to the front door of the home. Engine 404 entered the home at this time to facilitate the extinguishment of the fire, as the members of Ladder 403 searched and found one victim in the fire apartment. At this time, Ladder 403 members removed the victim out of the building to an awaiting ambulance. Engine 406 and Engine 405 stretched additional hose lines and assisted Engine 404 with movement of the first hose line. Ambulance 408 & 4081 were on scene and rendered care to the victim who was removed from the fire apartment. That victim was transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital by Ambulance 408. The fire was contained to the second floor apartment and was quickly brought under control by the quick actions of the first responders. During the operation two firefighters were treated for injuries and transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital by Ambulance 4081 and NCPD Ambulance.
Mutual Aid from the surrounding fire departments helped also in making this operation go smoothly. An Oceanside Ladder, Lynbrook Engine and Rockville Centre Ambulance covered the Village of East Rockaway while the East Rockaway Fire Department was involved at this fire. Rockville Centre Ladder Company was called to the scene to act as a FAST truck, and additionally an Oceanside Ambulance and Lynbrook Ambulance supplemented the need for ambulances at the scene after East Rockaway Ambulances 408 and 4081 transported the victim and members to the hospital.
This fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office and Nassau County Police Arson and Bomb Squad. A great job was done by all members and Mutual Aid departments who responded and hope for a speedy recovery to the injured firefighters. All operations were under the direction of Thomas Johnson, Chief of the Department.
