Elmont Road [9-14-19]
On the night of Saturday, September 14th, 2019 the Elmont Fire Department was called to smoke from the basement at a 99-cent store at the corner of Elmont Road and Cromer Road West. When firefighters arrived on scene, they were met with heavy smoke pushing from a two-story mixed occupancy. A signal ten [working fire] was transmitted by Elmont First Assistant Chief Schriefer [7011] and mutual aid notified. As the operation went on firefighters found that they had fire in the basement of the store with extension to the first and second floors. Multiple hand lines were put into operation to fight the fire which took approximately two hours to bring under control. Among the departments called for mutual aid was Valley Stream, Lynbrook, Malverne, Floral Park, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Franklin Square, Hempstead, and West Hempstead among others. The cause of the fire, which reached multiple alarms, is under investigation. All fire department units were under the command of Elmont Chief of Department Robert Falco [7010].
