Lieutenant Hinton Street Renaming [5-22-21]
On the morning of Saturday, May 22nd, 2021 a street dedication ceremony was held on Irene Street in South Hempstead in honor of FDNY Lieutenant Henry J. Hinton. Born in Brooklyn Henry J. Hinton moved to Malverne as a child and went on to live in South Hempstead for thirty-seven years. Inspired by his father who was a member of the FDNY the younger Hinton also went on to become one of New York’s Bravest. Most of his career was spent as a firefighter in Queens before being promoted to Lieutenant and then working in Lower Manhattan. Henry J. Hinton completed two decades of service to the City of New York before retiring in July of 2001. Despite being recently retired when the September 11th terrorist attacks occurred, he responded and then worked at Ground Zero for weeks after. As a result of his efforts and dedication Henry contracted lung cancer and passed away in January of 2021 at the age of sixty-five. At the Saturday morning street dedication various dignitaries and family members spoke before the street sign was officially unveiled. During the remarks Henry’s children [Henry Jr. and Barbara] spoke about their courageous father and how he lived around the motto “leave a place better than you found it.”
