Lieutenant Raguso Street Renaming [8-3-19]
On the morning of Saturday, August 3rd, 2019 a street renaming ceremony was held at Commack Fire Headquarters. The ceremony was held to commemorate an eight-and-a-half-mile section of Jericho Turnpike [from Elmwood Road to the Smithtown Bull] becoming Lt. Christopher J. Raguso FDNY-CFD Memorial Highway. Raguso was one of seven Air National Guard members of the 106th Rescue Wing [based out of Westhampton Beach, NY] killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq on March 15th, 2018. Aside from serve with the United States Air Force Chris was a 15-year veteran of the FDNY – first assigned to Ladder 113 in Flatbush, Brooklyn and later promoted to Lieutenant serving in Queens’ Battalion 50. He was also a member of the Commack Fire Department where he and his family lived.
Present at the Saturday morning event were Lieutenant Raguso’s family members including his parents, wife, two daughters, and brother. Other family members, friends and fellow firefighters from both Commack and the FDNY were on hand along with members of the USAF. Several dignitaries spoke including FDNY Commissioner Nigro and Suffolk County Executive Bellone. The most notable speeches came from Lt. Raguso’s widow Carmela and his father John. The renamed street will help to ensure that Christopher Raguso’s legacy lives on and that he is never forgotten.
