East Sunrise Highway [8-29-16]
At 05:30 hours on the morning of Monday, August 29th, 2016 the Freeport Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment outside of Home Depot [160 East Sunrise Highway]. Freeport Second Assistant Chief Alfredo Ruiz [2102] was among the first to arrive on scene and asked Fire Com to re alert for Heavy Rescue 217-2 as he had a confirmed pin with one-person unconscious. Moments later 217-2 arrived on scene and had the tool in operation; however, after a few minutes of extricating the victim was pronounced by a Nassau County AMT. Freeport Fire Department units were released from the scene not long after and the scene was turned over to Freeport Police. It was later stated the driver of the van may have had a medical emergency while driving before slamming into the rear of a box truck waiting to make a turn into the Home Depot parking lot. A second person from the van was transported to an area hospital and is expected to survive. The driver of the box truck refused medical attention and remained on scene. All fire department units were under the command of Freeport First Assistant Chief Matt Colgan [2101].
