Freeport September 11th Ceremony [9-11-11]
Shortly after the 9/11 attacks took place, a handful of Freeport residents who were deeply affected by the tragedy began assembling a makeshift memorial at the Bavyiew Avenue traffic circle. In time, their efforts began to draw attention from the village around them. Donations, candles, and small tokens of awareness and care began to trickle in from the community. Amongst the donations was funding from Engine Company Number One of the Freeport Fire Department who lost one of their members to the attacks [also a member of FDNY] - Richard T. Muldowney. The Wide Awakes time and effort over the years helped make a new, permanent memorial possible. And so, on the tenth anniversary of that Tragic Tuesday much of Freeport and it's Fire Department came out to not only honor those lost in the attacks but to be on hand for the dedication ceremony of the new, lighthouse memorial.
