2nd Street [11-28-16]
Around 16:15 hours on the afternoon of Monday, November 28th, 2016 the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke in the basement at 68 2nd Street between Rockaway and Cathedral Avenues. As fire department units began to assemble crews and respond they were advised that Garden City Police were on scene reporting a working fire. Garden City Chief of Department William Castoro [1400] was among the first fire department units to arrive on scene and was met with smoke showing from a two-story private dwelling. The chief then transmitted a signal ninety-eight [smoke showing] which when transmitted in Garden City sends one FAST and one mutual aid ambulance to the scene. New Hyde Park was designated the FAST and responded with Ladder 175. Upon further investigation firefighters found they had fire in the beams between the basement and first floor leading to the transmission of a signal ten [working fire]. The New Hyde Park FAST was quickly put to work as an additional truck company and Franklin Square and Munson became the new FAST responding with Ladder 713. Two hand lines were stretched with one going into operation to contain the fire. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the original area in which it started and it did not extend to the first floor. Later in the operation the standby ladder from Mineola was called to the scene to assist in the operation. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. All fire department units were under the command of Garden City Chief of Department William Castoro [1400].
