Fulton Avenue [11-27-12]
In an attempt to miss hitting a pedestrian crossing Fulton Avenue, a Nassau County NICE bus driver swerved out of control and into a home on the night of November 27th. Despite the driver's best efforts, the pedestrian was still struck by the bus and among the many aided on scene.
When the Hempstead Fire Department, led by Chief Scott Clark [80], arrived on scene they were met with a confirmed bus into a house with entrapment. The request for technical rescue teams and multiple ambulances to respond to the scene was made. Rockville Centre and North Bellmore responded to the scene with technical rescue teams due to the instability of the home.
Ambulances responded to the scene from Freeport, Uniondale, Elmont, Oceanside, South Hempstead, West Hempstead, Stewart Manor, and Baldwin. Multiple ambulances from the Nassau County EAB and North Shore LIJ also responded to the accident. The staging area for all ambulances was in the Burger King parking lot across from the home. West Hempstead also responded to the scene as a FAST team with Ladder 765 while South Hempstead stood by in Hempstead headquarters with an engine. Among the aided, the most serious was a six year old boy pinned between the bus and an interior part of the home. The boy, along with his seven year old brother, were in a bedroom in the one, four corner of the home when the bus came barreling through. The seven year old boy was transported and expected to survive; however, his younger brother died from his injuries at the hospital. In all as many as eight of the busses' passengers were injured in the crash along with the two boys inside the home. Following the crash the investigation continued as to exactly what happened.
