Long Beach Road [8-20-12]
On the afternoon of August 20th, the Island Park Fire Department was dispatched to the Bayview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at 1 Long Beach Road for an automatic alarm. However, upon arrival units were met with a fire condition inside a storage room on the second floor of the building. At this time a working fire was transmitted and because of the high occupancy of the building the automatic second alarm procedure was filled out. As firefighters began to make their way upstairs towards the fire room they discovered that the building’s sprinkler system knocked down a portion of the fire and the one line that operated extinguished the remainder.
As part of the automatic mutual aid plan, the Long Beach Fire Department sent one ladder, one engine, and one ambulance to the scene. With the second alarm assignment, the LBFD also sent a field communications unit to the scene. Mutual aid was also comprised of an Oceanside FAST team, Rockville Centre Rehab Unit, and a Point Lookout-Lido Ladder. Baldwin and Freeport were also included in the fire’s mutual aid plan but were disregarded. The fire was thought to have been caused by a faulty air conditioning unit; however, the actual cause remained under investigation. Island Park Engine 225 was the first engine on scene while Ladder 223 was the first truck company on scene. All fire department units were under the command of Island Park Chief of Department Steve Ruscio [221].
