Westwood Village [4-4-15]
On the windy afternoon of Saturday, April 4th, 2015 the Jericho Fire Department was dispatched to a report of fire through the roof of the Westwood Village Apartments with people possibly trapped. This dispatch came as a result of a passing Nassau County EAB AMT who called in the fire. Westbury Engine 966 and 9602, taking up from a previous call, were in the area at the time and responded based off of the report. Jericho Engine 942, one of the first Jericho units out, went on to immediately transmit a second alarm. In order to contain the fire additional tower ladders were requested to the scene and put into place on various sides of the fire building upon arrival. In front of the building was Jericho Ladder 941, Syosset Ladder 582, and Bethpage Ladder 4 along with the command post. On the two, three corner was Westbury Ladder 962 and Hicksville Ladder 936 on the number four side of the fire building. Once these ladders were up and operating along a few hand lines firefighters were able to get the upper hand on the fire.
The initial FAST for the fire was Syosset; however, Syosset went to work upon arrival. They were replaced by Bethpage who also saw work once on scene. The FAST was then changed to Locust Valley who responded with Ladder 546. Additional mutual aid to the scene consisted of units from Glenwood, Farmingdale, Plainview, East Norwich, and a full department response from Westbury. Standby units were put into place for both Jericho and Westbury during the operation. Within one hour the scene was placed under control. The early reports of people trapped were false while one firefighter was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
