Nassau and Burnside [7-7-21]
Shortly after 04:00 hours on the morning of Wednesday, July 7th, 2021, the Lawrence Cedarhurst Fire Department was called to a motor vehicle accident involving an overturned tanker truck with possible entrapment at the intersection of Nassau Expressway [Route 878] and Burnside Avenue. When firefighters arrived on scene, they were met with an overturned tanker truck hauling an estimated 11,000 gallons of gasoline and actively leaking. The driver of the big rig was able to self-extricate and was not seriously injured. Lawrence-Cedarhurst firefighters [assisted by mutual aid companies] immediately began a foam operation and other defensive measures. The incident lasted several hours and saw various fire departments and agencies from across Nassau County report into the scene or to standby. All the remaining product inside of the truck was offloaded by late morning. The scene was placed under control nearly nine hours after it began, and command terminated shortly after the nine-hour mark.
