East Fulton Street [9-26-12]
At 15:44 hours on the afternoon of September 26th, the Long Beach Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire at 171 East Fulton Street [Long Beach and Riverside Boulevards as the cross streets]. Riding Ambulance 2321, Ex-Chief Kemins was among the first on scene and wasted no time in transmitting the signal ten [working fire]. The first units to arrive on scene were met with a heavy fire load on the first and second floors of a vacant, two story private dwelling. The main body of fire was concentrated in the rear of the home and was causing the power lines to the home to burn off of the house and onto the ground. These lines were live and posed a high risk to operating firefighters and so LIPA was requested to the scene immediately.
Long Beach Engine 2343 and Ladder 2362 were the first engine and truck companies on scene. Engine 2343 immediately took to a hydrant and put at least two lines into operation to fight the fire. Long Beach Engine 2344 put a line into operation to contain the exposure problems when the fire began to melt away the exterior of a neighboring home. Island Park Ladder 223 responded to the scene as the FAST team but during operations was put to work. When Island Park was put to work, Oceanside Ladder 244 became the new FAST team on scene. Island Park also responded to the scene with Ambulance 222.
Approximately thirty minutes into operations, the main body of fire was knocked down and the overhauling process began. Standing by for Long Beach was Oceanside Engine 2482, Point Lookout-Lido Engine 255 along with Ambulances 252 [PLLFD] and 369 [Atlantic Beach Rescue]. The fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire and all fire department units were under the command of Long Beach Chief of Department Richard Corbett.
