Brompton Road [4-19-20]
On the morning of Sunday, April 19th, 2020 all six companies of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department were dispatched to an apartment fire at a three-story occupied multiple dwelling on Brompton Road in the Great Neck section of their district. As fire department units were on the way they were advised by their dispatcher that Nassau County Police were on scene with heavy smoke coming from a third-floor window and an occupant preparing to jump. That occupant, who jumped prior to firefighters arriving on scene, landed on a police officer below. Those two were among a total of five people injured and transported to area hospitals – none considered to be life threatening. Manhasset Lakeville Deputy Chief Weisburd [8702], among the first fire units to arrive on scene, transmitted a signal ten [working fire]. Mutual aid units were then notified to respond to the scene and to standby. MLFD EMS Captain Lee Genser declared a mass casualty incident which brought multiple ambulances to the scene. Despite a long, hand stretch firefighters made a quick knock down of the fire and kept it to contained to the one apartment. Several occupants in the building were evacuated and refused medical attention. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
