Loop Parkway [10-21-20]
Late on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 21st, 2020 the Merrick Fire Department operated on the scene of a helicopter crash. A private helicopter crash landed in a marsh area several hundred yards off the Loop Parkway. At the time of the incident there was heavy fog and low visibility. The 64-year-old male pilot [the only soul onboard] was not seriously injured, was brought to the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station by Merrick Fire Department Marine 1, and was then transported to an area hospital by a Nassau County Police Ambulance. Several agencies were on scene both on the Loop Parkway and at the Coast Guard Station. These agencies included the Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department, United States Coast Guard, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Nassau County Police, and the Nassau County Police Emergency Services Unit. The cause of the crash is under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of Merrick Chief of Department Paul Scolieri [6400].
