Merrick Road [11-13-16]
In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 13th, 2016 the Merrick Fire Department was dispatched to a reported building fire at the Town of Hempstead sanitation yard off Merrick Road. Responding fire department units were advised that Nassau County Police were on scene reporting a working fire. When fire department units arrived on scene they found a large volume of fire inside of the sanitation transfer building. A signal ten [working fire] was transmitted and mutual aid notified. Bellmore was notified for the FAST and responded with Ladder 606. Freeport was notified for an additional ladder to the scene and responded with Ladder 217. Merrick Empire Engine 642 was the first engine to arrive on scene and had multiple hand lines in operation as well as the deck gun for a short time (this was the first working fire for the recently put into service Engine 642). Merrick Ladder 6411 was put into operation and used for a good duration of the operation. Within forty minutes firefighters had all visible fire knocked down and the scene was placed under control. Units from North Merrick and North Bellmore stood by for Merrick during the operation. All fire department units were under the command of Merrick Chief of Department Gies [6400].
