Willis Avenue [3-2-17]
Late on the night of Thursday, March 2nd, 2017 the Mineola Fire Department was dispatched to an automatic alarm at K’s Auto Repair located at 74 Willis Avenue off 2nd Street. Responding fire department units were advised that an additional call was reporting a possible truck fire extending to the building at the location. When fire department units arrived on scene they were met with heavy fire in a one story commercial building as well as in a box truck parked alongside the building. A signal ten [working fire] was immediately transmitted and various mutual aid units called to the scene to assist. Among those called were New Hyde Park, Garden City Park, Garden City, Mineola VAC, Williston Park, and East Williston among others. The operation last well into the early morning hours of Friday as firefighters had to deal with over a dozen cars in the building paired with various fuels. Tower ladders and hand lines were placed on all sides of the fire building to protect the exposures and get a hold on the tremendous fire load. There were no firefighter injuries; however, the owner of the building had a dog inside that did not survive. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshals Office.
