Nassau County Fire Awards [4-15-15]
The night of April 15th, 2015 was a night of celebration as firefighters of the Nassau County Fire Service and a civilian were honored at the annual Nassau County Fire Commission Awards Ceremony. The award ceremony took place at the Francis X. Pendl Memorial Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center. An arch detail was setup outside of the museum entrance using ladders from the Mineola and West Hempstead fire departments.
The awards for the night included:
- A silver medal of valor [class II great personal risk] awarded to Mineola Lt. Kevin Nicoll for his actions at a Port Washington boat fire on August 20th, 2014. Lt. Nicoll was an employee in the marina where the fire took place and secured the gas shutoff that day to keep the fire from spreading to a greater area.
- A bronze medal of valor [meritorious personal risk] awarded to Garden City Captain Joseph Scalisi and Firefighters Russ Fincher, John Finneran, and Michael Morgan for their actions at a building collapse with entrapment on October 17th, 2014. These men successfully removed and saved the lives of two workers trapped in an asbestos filled basement.
- A civilian citation to Jose Mauricio for his actions at a Port Washington boat fire on August 20th, 2014. Jose, employee of the marina, towed the fiery vessel away from land and to open water so that the fire load would not spread to exposures.
- A unit citation award to the Garden City and Port Washington Fire Departments. Port Washington for their actions at a house explosion in August of 2014 and Garden City for their actions at a building collapse in October of 2014.
