North 12th Street [12-30-18]
Minutes after 03:00 hours on the morning of Sunday, December 30th, 2018 the New Hyde Park Fire Department was called to a house fire on North 12th Street off Lowell Avenue. Upon arrival firefighters were met with heavy fire throughout a two-story private dwelling with one adult female and one child confirmed trapped inside. The interior stairs of the home quickly burned away forcing firefighters to use a ground ladder to access the victims [who were located at the two, three corner of the home]. Firefighters were able to rescue the trapped occupants, and both were transported in serious condition. Not long after the victims were pulled from the home the fire conditions deteriorated leading to an evacuation order of all members and a brief exterior operation. Once the upper hand was gained on the fire an interior attack was put back into place. Among the departments called for mutual aid to the second alarm fire were Garden City, Garden City Park, Mineola, Franklin Square, and Floral Park among others. Despite the best efforts of firefighters, the two victims rescued from the home later succumbed to their injuries. A second child who was in the home and jumped from a second-floor window along with an adult male who self evacuated survived the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
