Illona Lane [7-27-12]
Those across the south shore of Nassau County began to see heavy, black smoke filling the summer sky on July 27th just before two-thirty in the afternoon. The smoke was coming from a reported boat fire that the Oceanside Fire Department was dispatched to at the same time. Oceanside units were given the address 3844 Illona Lane, just off of East Oceanside Road. While responding Assistant Chief Klein [241A] saw the smoke condition and immediately requested the presence of the East Rockaway fire boat along with Oceanside Engine 2472 [the foam unit]. When Chief Klein arrived on scene, he gave a size up of a boat that was approximately thirty feet in length, fully involved, with exposure problems to surrounding homes a factor as well. The Chief was also advised that the boat had been recently filled, and had up to two-hundred gallons of fuel within.
During operations, the engulfed yacht broke away from its original dock and went mobile down the canal. The boat was tied down two, neighboring homes away. Multiple hand lines were put to use to fight the fire which was attacked from three sides at different times. Lines came off of Oceanside Engines 243 and 2472, Nassau County Marine Boat 6, East Rockaway Marine One, and units positioned on Carrel Boulevard. Of the lines put into place, one of them was concentrated on the burning dock where the boat was originally tied. The other lines were dedicated to the burning boat. Oceanside Ladder 244 was the first ladder on scene and members of Truck Company helped secure the boat so it could be extinguished and assisted in the overhaul process.
Various mutual aid units were called to the scene and to standby at Oceanside Headquarters on Foxhurst Road. The fire came at a time when manpower can be hard to come by. The heat and humidity also played roles in the need for new firefighters on scene. On scene from the Freeport Fire Department was Engine 216 along with Dive Units 211-2 and 2117. Island Park sent one of their engines and busses to the scene along with Long Beach who sent Engine 2344 and Ladder 2372. Baldwin sent Engine 201 to the scene with a ladder and bus as part of the mutual aid plan as well. Later into the fire, Rockville Centre sent Engine 445 to the scene to assist.
Standing by for Oceanside was a RVCFD engine and bus along with Freeport Truck Company. All fire department units were under the command of First Assistant Chief Klein [241A]. Nassau County Haz-Mat was called to the scene because of an apparent fuel leak that later proved negative. Assistance on scene was provided by the T.O.H. Bay Constable and Nassau County Police Marine Bureau. One firefighter was transported from the scene to South Nassau for heat exhaustion. The scene and investigation was left in the hands of the fire marshal and private tow.
