Vermont Avenue [11-14-12]
Just before 22:00 hours on the night of November 14th, multiples calls were being received reporting smoke from a house and a possible chimney fire in Oceanside. Locations for the possible fire were being given as the intersection of Vermont and Lawrence Avenues and across from 56 Vermont Avenue. Upon arrival, the first units on scene found the attached garage of 45 Vermont Avenue fully involved and extending into the home. Oceanside Engine 249 immediately transmitted the signal ten [working fire] and began stretching a line. Baldwin was notified for a FAST team and responded to the scene with Ladder 207. Due to the fire load and overhauling that needed to be done, members of Baldwin Truck Company were put to work. Freeport Ladder 217, originally sent to standby at Oceanside Headquarters, was redirected to the scene. Before operations were complete, Freeport also saw a brief amount of work inside the home.
Within forty minutes, firefighters had the fire placed under control. The initial investigation found that the fire started in the electric panel box which was located in the garage. The family was not home at the time of the fire as they were displaced by the recent hurricane. However, it was said that an electrical inspection had taken place earlier in the day to ensure the home was ready to be re-energized. Upstate New York units were on scene assisting in operations. At least two lines were stretched and operated while a Rockville Centre ladder was among the units standing by for Oceanside. The fire marshal was requested to the scene for an immediate investigation and all fire department units were under the command of First Assistant Chief Klein [241A].
