LBHS Garage Collapse [4-6-12]
Just before 17:30 hours on April 6th, the Point Lookout Lido Fire Department was dispatched to Long Beach High School [322 Lagoon Drive West in Lido Beach] for a parking garage collapse. Responding units did not know if any victims were trapped underneath the rubble or if there was structural damage to the school building. Chief Guerin [2500] was incident command and requested the presence of Freeport and North Bellmore to the scene for their technical rescue teams. After confirming that there was no entrapment and that the structure was secure, mutual aid units were disregarded. PLLFD units were able to confirm that no victims were trapped by using three heat sensitive cameras. Security cameras on the school grounds were also reviewed to ensure no one was near the school at the time of the collapse. The cameras near the collapse zone were either destroyed or out of range to make a full determination if people had been around at the time. It was confirmed that construction crews were on the grounds earlier in the day but left hours prior to the incident. The section that collapsed was a ceiling portion of the garage and did not bring down anything from the first floor of the school. Units on scene included PLLFD Engines 253 and 255, Ladder 254, Ambulances 252 and 258, and Chiefs 2500, 2501, and 2502. Nassau County Emergency Services Unit 2422, County Bus 2394, and various officers from the fourth precinct were on scene as well.
