Debevoise Avenue [12-8-18]
On the night of Saturday, December 8th, 2018 the Roosevelt Fire Department was called to a house fire on Debevoise Avenue off Charles Street. When Roosevelt First Assistant Chief Chris Wint [7301] arrived on scene he reported smoke showing. Moments later a signal ten [working fire] was transmitted. Firefighters stretched a hand line to the basement where the fire began; however, the home was believed to be of balloon construction causing the fire to extend to the floors above. During the operation firefighters briefly evacuated the home and conducted roll calls due to deteriorating conditions. It took just over one hour to bring the fire under control [signal twelve]. Among the departments called for mutual aid were North Merrick, Hempstead, Elmont, West Hempstead, South Hempstead, and Uniondale. Baldwin Ladder 207, Freeport Engine 215, and an ambulance from North Merrick stood by for Roosevelt and handled at least one alarm while the fire was going on. The cause of the fire is under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of Roosevelt First Assistant Chief Chris Wint [7301].
