Hausch Boulevard [7-31-12]
First Precinct Officers from Nassau County Police were the first dispatched to a possible house fire in Roosevelt just after eleven a.m. on the morning of July 31st. The location given was 89 Hausch Boulevard, just off of Meyer Street. After arriving on scene, officers advised dispatch to notify the fire department they had a working fire. Roosevelt Ladder 735 and Quint 734 [“the Magic Stick”] were the first units to roll and arrive; however, each had short crews. Roosevelt’s Second Assistant Chief [7302] was the incident commander for much of the operations until the First Assistant arrived on scene. Units on scene were faced with a working bedroom fire on the second floor of the private dwelling. The fire was heavy in the three, four corner of the home with smoke billowing from all sides. At least two lines off of 734 were put into operation to fight the shorthanded fire.
Mutual aid was called to the scene to assist in operations. North Merrick responded with Ladder 673 and was the FAST team on scene. Hempstead sent Truck One and Engine 5 along with Uniondale who sent Engine 752. No injuries were reported, but at least one firefighter was evaluated by medics on scene. Pulled from the home were two caged parakeets, one of which did not survive. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
