May Street [8-29-12]
On the afternoon of August 29th, the South Hempstead Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire at 601 May Street [Central and Webber Avenues as the cross streets], just one block east of their fire headquarters. The first units on scene were met by smoke showing from the private dwelling and moments later a signal ten [working fire] was transmitted. South Hempstead Engine 741 was the first engine to arrive on scene, immediately putting a line into place and up to the second floor where the fire was located. As the line was being put into place, South Hempstead Quint 742 was arriving on scene. In only a few minutes all visible fire was knocked down and members of Truck Company were opening up to check for extension. The fire was located between the ceiling and the roof in the three, four corner of the home. Mutual aid to the scene consisted of Baldwin Ladder 206 as the FAST Team, Hempstead Ladder 2, and an ambulance from Rockville Centre. Standing by in South Hempstead Fire Headquarters was an ambulance from Uniondale and engines from Roosevelt and West Hempstead.
