Braxton Street [9-13-12]
Just before midnight on the night of September 13th, the Uniondale Fire Department was alerted to a reported house fire at 1118 Braxton Street (Manor Parkway and Ruxton Place as the cross streets). Nassau County Police officers from the First Precinct, who received multiple calls reporting the fire, had already been on scene and confirmed the working fire.
When Chief Lebron [7500] arrived on scene he immediately reported smoke showing from the private dwelling. Moments later, the signal ten [working fire] was transmitted and the request for mutual aid began. North Bellmore was notified for a FAST team and responded to the scene with Ladder 658. Also on scene was Hempstead Truck One as well as an engine from Roosevelt. From the Uniondale Fire Department, Engine 7533 and Ladder 7544 were the first engine and truck companies on scene.
Firefighters were faced with a fire that upon arrival was exposing itself in the one, two corner of the home. However, due to the [older] construction of the home the fire travelled down the number two side of the home where it exposed itself again in the two, three corner. During operations, firefighters began to lose access to the basement as the stairways burned away and collapsed. As the fire appeared to be knocked down on the first floor of the home it became prevalent on the second floor of the home.
Within thirty-five minutes all visible fire was knocked down and the overhaul process had begun. Standby in Uniondale Fire Headquarters consisted of a Roosevelt ladder, South Hempstead ambulance, and a Westbury engine. At least one firefighter was treated on scene for unknown injuries. All fire department units were under the command of Uniondale Chief of Department Lebron [7500]. The cause of the late night fire remained under investigation.
