Southern State Parkway [7-18-12]
Just before six in the morning on July 18th, the Uniondale Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with overturn and fire on the Southern State Parkway. The fire department got the call from police who had already gotten multiple calls on it as well as various locations. After first coming across the smoke and then the fully involved vehicle, police found the car westbound between exits 21 and 22. Once on scene, police confirmed that the lone occupant of the vehicle was out prior to their arrival. It was later discovered that the vehicle had gone off the road and landed on its driver’s side. The vehicle was up righted by passerby who stopped and also pulled the driver from the burning vehicle, bringing him a safe distance away. Uniondale Engine 7522 was the first engine on scene and immediately put a line into place to extinguish the engulfed Nissan. Moments later Engine 7533 arrived on scene and sent their manpower up to assist. Uniondale also rolled their fire department ambulance to the scene, but the aided [the sixty-year old male driver] was transported by County Ambulance 2351. All units were under the command of Uniondale’s First Assistant Chief [7501]. After fire department units took up the scene was left in the hands of State Police and the car removed via All County. It was unknown what caused the accident and remained under investigation.
