Brooklyn Avenue [5-16-21]
On the evening of Sunday, May 16th, 2021 the Valley Stream Fire Department was called to a building fire in the vicinity of Sunrise Highway and Rockaway Avenue. When firefighters arrived on scene, they were met with flames and heavy smoke showing from the roof of a five-story mixed occupancy [commercial on the ground floor with four floors of apartments above]. A signal ten [working fire] was transmitted with a second alarm following shortly after. Firefighters put the building’s standpipe system into operation and made the stretch to the roof. The fire was quickly knocked down and contained to the area of origin. Despite occupants needing assistance out of the building and early reports of people hanging out of windows there were only two minor injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation. All fire department units were under the command of Valley Stream Chief of Department O’Brien [3400].
