Hannington Avenue [8-4-12]
On the afternoon of August 4th, the Wantagh Fire Department was dispatched to what would be their second working fire in three days. This time the fire was located at 1646 Hannington Avenue, just off of Johnson Place. Upon arrival, Wantagh’s Chief of Department and Second Assistant Chief were met with fire in the one, four corner of a private dwelling and a heavy smoke condition emanating from the home. Along with the original dispatch of the reported house fire, was the report of entrapment within the home. Because of the possibility of victims within the home, those first on the scene wasted no time in making entry into the home. These men faced little to no visibility and a choking smoke condition throughout. Upon searching the home, a victim was discovered on the first floor and pulled from the burning home in cardiac arrest. Firefighters and medics began CPR on scene. The victim, an approximately eighty year old, was then transported to NUMC by Wantagh FD ambulance. Two other occupants were home at the time of the fire, but safely exited.
Upon arriving on scene and discovering the working fire, the Chief requested Bellmore to the scene as the FAST team and that Seaford respond with an additional ambulance. Firefighter’s searches were hindered by the collier’s mansion conditions they faced inside the home. The fire, which was heaviest on the first floor, also extended into the second floor. Levittown’s Ladder 626 which was originally directed to standby at Wantagh Headquarters was redirected to the scene to assist in overhaul operations. Three lines were stretched off of first due Engine 698 to fight the fire. Several firefighters were admitted to the neighboring rehab area that was established. All fire department units were under the command of Wantagh Chief of Department Billy Allen [6900].
