SUNY Old Westbury [4-13-12]
Just after 11:00 hours on Friday the 13th, the Westbury Fire Department responded to the SUNY Old Westbury Campus for a reported brush fire after receiving the call from Campus Police. Jericho Chief 9403 was the first Chief on scene after having already been on the road for a smoke in the area call nearby. As units arrived on scene it was discovered that the fire was burning over a large area of brush within the Jericho Fire District and so Westbury and Jericho units continued in. Jericho Chief 9402 was the second Chief on scene and requested that specific brush units respond to the scene. Among the first out of town units that arrived on scene was Hicksville Incident Command Unit 9317. With this mobile unit now on scene the Chiefs and Ninth Battalion leaders were able to communicate with FireCom and request the exact units they needed to start out. Various engines, brush trucks, and stump jumpers responded to the scene and stood by in quarters. Hand lines were put into place from three different sides of the fire to contain it while the specialty units drove into the woods to get a better handle on the fire. After a couple of hours of knocking the main body of fire down and getting to several hot spots, the fire was declared under control. In the end it was estimated that anywhere from five to ten acres had been burned on the college campus property, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
The mutual aid units that responded to the scene and stood by in quarters consisted of apparatus from different battalions as well as a few from Suffolk County. From the fifth battalion were Glenwood, East Norwich, and Syosset. Representing the ninth battalion was Plainview, Hicksville, Farmingdale, and South Farmingdale. Uniondale responded to the scene with Brush Unit 75B while Port Washington and Manhasset-Lakeville Engines responded to the scene on behalf of the eighth battalion. Garden City and Mineola [first battalion], Mass and North Mass [sixth battalion] were also a part of the Friday the 13th fire. Melville, Wyandanch, and North Babylon came from Suffolk to help contain the fire as well.
One aided was reported by the fire’s end along with two RMA’s. These injuries came after the air line blew on 75B sending the Uniondale brush unit rolling down a hill and into a tree. The aided was transported to NUMC with minor neck and back pain.
